Purpose of Today's Lesson

The purpose of this lesson is to teach 3rd grade students how to find the area of rectangles and composite shapes. This lesson is taught on the first day of a seven day unit. 3rd Grade students are introduced counting unit squares as a strategy for finding area and multiplying the length times the width to find the area.

  • The students will count unit squares to the find the area of a rectangle.
  • The students will multiply the length times the width of a rectuangle to find the area.
  • The students will use the distributive property to find the area of composite shpaes.
